Welcome to Chestnut Class, a mixed year group class comprised of Year 2 and Year 3 children. Although this mix is unusual, it has proved to be effective in smoothing the transition between the end of Key Stage 1 and the beginning of Key Stage 2 (which is often a challenging one). As the children are learning with or alongside the other year group in most lessons, they have the bonus of knowing what to expect in Year 3 (a luxury most children don’t have). Another advantage of the mixed class setup is that each new group of Year 2 children has Year 3 role models who are always happy to support the younger children.
