“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents.”

Curriculum Intent

High quality Geography provision is essential to children making sense of the world around them in terms of their locality, country and the wider world. Studying Geography allows them to understand how our varying landscapes and contrasting places have developed and changed over time, and how ultimately the human race has impacted modern day. At Bladon Primary School we teach Geography through themes to give children’s learning a meaningful context, as well as develop a deeply embedded knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Through enrichment opportunities our aim is for children to leave our school as well rounded, responsible and respectful citizens.

Implementation

Geography is taught as part of a whole school topic-based approach, using cross-curricular links where possible. As Geographers, children’s imagination and curiosity is ignited. It is a means of exploring and understanding the world around us, as well as making the learning more personal by furthering their understanding of the immediate environment around them, and developing their geographical skills, understanding and knowledge. By developing their understanding of maps, children are encouraged to broaden their knowledge of difference places and environments. Staff continually review and adapt work to make the learning more personal and relevant to meet the needs of the children.

Impact

By making children more aware of their surroundings, we give them an opportunity to see how the environment is used, and implement techniques necessary to undertake fieldwork and geographical enquiries. We ensure we have clear organisation within our planning to ensure pupils are able to build on prior knowledge, and teachers are able to make links across the whole curriculum. The use of questioning is an ongoing formative assessment we use to measure a pupil’s ability to explain the concept in more depth and through assessment quizzes we can measure their attainment and progress.
