How do we promote Healthy Living?

At Bladon CE Primary School we believe it is essential to provide children with the education of how to look after themselves using well-informed decisions about their diet and health. This starts at an early age and so, starting in Acorn class, children learn about the importance of their wellbeing in a variety of ways.

Washing hands

All children wash their hands before they eat snack and lunch, as well as after going to the toilet. As soon as they start school, children learn about the importance of washing their hands and we talk about the best way to do it as well as how long for. We use the NHS guidelines to support their learning.

Snack time

Children are welcome to bring in a healthy mid-morning snack for them to enjoy and allow them to be ready for the rest of the morning. The National Fruit Scheme provides each child in EYFS/KS1 with a piece of fruit and Acorn Class all enjoy sitting down for snack time together, reading a story and sharing book talk.

Drinking Water

All children are encouraged to bring in a spill-proof bottle of water daily to keep their brain active and alert. Bottles go home at the end of the day to be washed and refilled. Children use these bottles as their lunchtime drink and will be refilled by staff if needed. All children can access their drink throughout the day.

Celebrations Guidance

At Bladon CE Primary School we recognise that a birthday is a very special time for young children and we want to ensure it is celebrated in an enjoyable, healthy and tooth friendly way.  We do this by –

  • All singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the birthday child
  • Inviting the birthday child to choose a story to be read to the whole group

We discourage parents/carers from bringing in unhealthy treats to celebrate birthdays. Healthy treats are welcome, such as fresh fruit that the children do not often have, for example strawberries or blueberries. Non-food items are also permitted, for example temporary tattoos, stickers or small stationery items.

Any celebrations where we provide food such as at Christmas, Pancake day, Easter, Eid, Chinese New Year etc, we will ensure that this is eaten as part of a meal at school or if this is in between meals the food and drink will be tooth friendly i.e. fresh fruit/vegetables and savoury items, with milk or water to drink.
