Statement of Intent

At Bladon Primary School, we strive to ensure every child can achieve the highest standards possible through an inclusive and inspiring curriculum. Our school curriculum is underpinned by the values that we adhere to at Bladon Church of England Primary School. The curriculum is the means by which the school achieves its objective of educating children in the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need in order to lead fulfilling lives. Our Values are: Friendship, Resilience, Respect, Equity, Compassion and Responsibility. Our values run over a two-year programme, as we endeavour to look at each one in depth and ensure that they are embedded in everyday life, both in school and outside. With Christian values at the heart, we offer a stimulating and inspiring learning experience for all. We value each child as an individual and nurture their potential for learning with a high-quality topic-based curriculum to ensure they are prepared for their continuing learning journey.

As a small village school we are able to foster a motivating and creative curriculum that engages with the local community and accesses first hand learning opportunities to inspire and motivate. We are very proud to have strong partnerships with parents to ensure their child is always supported and given the opportunity to thrive.

Our curriculum is intended to:

  • Develop our mind and body: What we learn
  • Develop our hearts and character: Who we are
  • Develop our actions and attitudes: How we live and learn
  • Develop our moral compass: Where we fit in the world.

Implementation

Through high quality teaching of knowledge, skills and vocabulary across core and foundation subjects, all children are challenged to be inquisitive, compassionate, courageous and creative learners. They have opportunities to influence their own learning through age-appropriate and progressive themes and topics. Effective learning characteristics including being ambitious, reflective and imaginative, which will drive teaching and learning, as well as passion, praise and enthusiasm.

Senior Leaders and Governors ensure we all work in a strong and supportive environment, with the children’s education underpinning everything we do. Teachers have a clear progression of skills which structures the delivery and assessment of each subject. Each subject has an experienced Lead and a commitment to constantly improving their practice.

We are proud to offer specialist teaching in Music and PE which ensures we can provide a thorough and in-depth subject knowledge across these Foundation subjects. High quality PSHE teaching allows for an individual’s personal development, as well as enrichment opportunities such as Art Week, The Big Science Event, Residential, Young Voices and school trips that all contribute to a child being a successful learner.

The school aims to foster good relations between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not share it by:

• Promoting tolerance, friendship and understanding of a range of religions and cultures through different aspects of our curriculum. This includes teaching in RE, citizenship, and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, but also activities in other curriculum areas. For example, as part of teaching and learning in English/reading, children will be introduced to literature from a range of cultures

• Holding assemblies dealing with relevant issues. Children will be encouraged to take a lead in such assemblies and we will also invite external speakers to contribute

• Working with our local community. This includes inviting leaders of local faith groups to speak at assemblies, and organising school trips and activities based around the local community

• Encouraging and implementing initiatives to deal with tensions between different groups of children within the school. For example, our school council has representatives from different year groups and is formed of children from a range of backgrounds. All children are encouraged to participate in the school’s activities, such as sports clubs. We also work with parents to promote knowledge and understanding of different cultures

Impact

At Bladon Primary School we pride ourselves on a happy and safe school, where children are able to thrive and feel safe and cared for. Teachers and staff work hard to plan a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum to ensure their school experience is filled with opportunity, positivity and memorable moments.

We proudly recognise not just academic ability, but also sporting, musical and creative achievements. The amount of opportunities children have access to at Bladon is exceptional for such a small village school. We are proud to have a high level of participation in after school clubs and sporting events.

When leaving Bladon Primary School at the end of Year 6, we want to ensure children are ready for the next step in their educational journey and are well-placed to make a positive contribution to society. As learners, children will have a secure disciplinary and substantive knowledge base in all subjects across the primary curriculum.  They will demonstrate critical thinking skills, resilience and will have a love of learning which will set them up to be lifelong learners. As citizens in their community and the wider world, children will value individuality and self-expression, both in themselves and others, and will demonstrate tolerance and friendship towards all, regardless of individual differences.
