The school follows a rigorous and systematic approach to the teaching of synthetic phonics supported by Ruth Miskin’s ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics scheme of work. Our school’s approach to phonics establishes consistent practice, continuity and progression in the teaching and learning of phonics. We engage in staff training and development to ensure phonics teaching is high quality. We use Read, Write Inc (RWI) materials to support the teaching of phonics, ensuring that we adapt our sessions to meet the needs of all children in class.
Children in Reception learn 3 sounds a week and very quickly learn to blend these sounds together to read words. Children in Year 1 continue learning and recapping previous sounds learnt in order to develop their reading skills and confidence. All children are heard reading at least twice a week and we strongly encourage children to read at home with their parents.
