At our school, we believe spirituality is an important part of a child’s growth and wellbeing. Spirituality is about the moments that make us pause and reflect on the deeper things in life—our feelings, our relationships, our values and the big questions about meaning and purpose.

We support children to explore spirituality in an age-appropriate and inclusive way, helping them to develop empathy, self-awareness and a sense of wonder about the world around them. These moments might happen when a child experiences something beautiful in nature, shows kindness to a friend, listens to a story that makes them think deeply or reflects on what truly matters.

Windows, Mirrors and Doors

We use a simple and child-friendly framework called Windows, Mirrors and Doors to help pupils recognise and talk about spiritual moments:

  • Windows help children look out at the world with awe, curiosity and wonder.
  • Mirrors help children look within and reflect on their feelings, experiences and big questions.
  • Doors help children step forward and respond through kindness, service, courage and positive action.

This shared language helps children develop spiritual understanding across school life and you may see these symbols and prompts displayed in classrooms and shared spaces. For example,

How we nurture spirituality

Spiritual development is not limited to Religious Education. It is woven through everything we do, including:

  • Collective Worship: which offers time for reflection, stillness, prayer and thoughtful response.
  • Religious Education: where pupils explore different beliefs and worldviews in a safe and respectful environment.
  • Everyday learning across the curriculum: where pupils are encouraged to wonder, reflect, ask questions and connect learning to life.
  • Quiet and reflective spaces: indoors and outdoors, where children can pause and think calmly, including our developing peace garden.

Our approach is inspired by our school vision and lived out through our Christian values. We work together as a whole community to nurture children as thoughtful, caring and spiritually aware individuals.

Reflection Journals

Every class has a Reflection Journal which provides a shared space for capturing and celebrating moments of spirituality as they arise throughout school life.

These journals are not books that are completed to a timetable. Instead, they grow naturally from the experiences children have each day—moments of awe and wonder, deep thinking, curiosity, creativity, stillness, big questions, acts of kindness or opportunities to reflect on our Christian vision and values.

The journals record photographs, children’s work, quotes and conversations, allowing pupils to express their thoughts in their own words. They provide a valuable record of children’s spiritual development over time and demonstrate how spirituality is woven throughout our curriculum, collective worship and wider school life. The journals also help staff to listen carefully to children’s voices, celebrate their insights and plan meaningful opportunities for further spiritual growth.

Our Reflection Journals help children to recognise how they are becoming rooted in faith through belonging and reflection, growing in wisdom through questioning and learning, and shining in life by noticing the ways they can make a positive difference to others.

Spirituality in Action – Shine Your Light

Spirituality is not only found in moments of stillness and reflection; it is also expressed through action.

In September 2026, we launch our ‘Shine Your Light’ Missions, where every class explores an issue that matters to our local community or the wider world. Inspired by our Christian vision and Jesus’ call to “let your light shine”, children learn how their choices and actions can bring hope, demonstrate compassion and care for God’s creation.

These projects encourage pupils to reflect deeply on questions of justice, responsibility and service. They help children to recognise that spirituality is about both inward reflection and outward action—considering how we can use our gifts to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Together with our Reflection Journals, these experiences help children recognise how they are growing spiritually as they become rooted in faith, growing in wisdom and shining in life.
